About Me

Growing up in South Africa during Apartheid, I had to navigate a brutal, extremely religious society fraught with racial and cultural inequities. In the midst of that, there were the particular complexities of being a gay kid. Witnessing the country's transition to democracy and increasing liberalization just as I entered adulthood and art school was eye-opening. I felt awakened to the vast possibilities of both artistic and sexual expression.

The mythic promise of uncompromising freedom drew me to New York City, where I dreamt I could more freely explore and embrace my queer identity. I enrolled in SVA’s MFA program in photo and video, which played a pivotal role in deepening my understanding of myself as an artist and helped me build community. Manhattan has been my home for over 25 years. I continue to find inspiration in its streets, creating what I call non-straight street photography.

I've participated in numerous group shows across North America, Africa, and Europe for almost three decades. My film work has been presented in film festivals in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Madrid, Paris, and Berlin. Collaboration is a thriving aspect of my process and I relish sharing the creative process with other artists. I have extended artistic and design collaborations with Slava Mogutin, working on books, videos, and other projects, and with Billy Miller, publisher of Straight To Hell magazine. I've also collaborated with artists including Collier Schorr, LJ Roberts, Nath Ann Carrera, Michael Economy, and Desi Santiago. I’ve published five artist’s books, including "In a Stranger’s Pool” with Gio Black Peter.
